When one thinks of Missouri, the first city that often comes to mind is St. Louis. However, the state also is home to another beautiful destination - Kansas City. The largest city in the state, this cultural enclave has something for everyone whether they are sports enthusiasts, art buffs or simply just looking to take in part of the United States Midwest.
Kansas City is home to one of the oldest franchises in the National Football League, the Kansas City Chiefs. Since their beginnings as an original member of the AFL, the Chiefs have played an integral role in the league, even appearing in the inaugural Super Bowl. The Chiefs also have one of the biggest home field advantages in the NFL thanks to Arrowhead Stadium. The field has been home to the Chiefs since 1972, and is widely regarded as one of the most difficult places for opposing teams to play, which should surprise nobody as it often features 76,000 screaming fans.
Joining the Chiefs at the heart of the city's sports culture are the Kansas City Royals. Although the team entered the MLB in 1969, they quickly gained a loyal following, eventually winning a world series in 1985. The Royals have played at Kaufman Stadium since 1972, and despite being one of the older parks in the league, continues to be one of the most beautiful.
Outside of its passionate athletic following, Kansas City's culture is deep-rooted in the performing arts. Specifically, the Kansas City Repertory Theatre has been one of the more active groups in the country over its 45 years of existence. The theatre regularly sees 100,000 visitors each year, which is impressive given its 319 seat capacity.
Kansas City has also earned a reputation for its cuisine as well, specifically barbecue. Though it is home to numerous popular establishments, Gates Bar-B-Q stands above the rest. The first restaurant was founded in 1946 and has become famous for developing its own style of barbecuing.
Regardless of whether you're looking to kick back and enjoy a game at Kaufman Stadium or enjoy some of the city's trademark food, Kansas City will certainly leave any visitor smiling upon their leaving.
