The United Supermarkets Arena is an indoor multi-purpose arena on the campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Opened in 1999, the arena holds a capacity crowd of just over 15,000. The name, United Supermarkets Arena, was taken from the United Supermarkets chain of West Texas grocery stores, whose donation helped fund the building of the arena. The opening of United Supermarkets Arena has helped foreshadow an increased interest in Texas Tech basketball since the turn of the century. Bob Knight, former legendary coach of the University of Indiana team, took over the coaching position at Texas Tech in 2001, and has led his team to increased success. Visitors to the United Supermarkets Arena can’t help but feel the excitement for the basketball programs as they watch the action in this state of the art facility.
While primarily the home court of the Texas Tech Red Raider basketball teams, the United Supermarkets Arena has also hosted other notable events. Elton John performed at the arena in 2000. In 2006, the United Supermarkets Arena hosted a WWE Raw event, and in 2007 the WNBA’s Houston Comets played the Detroit Shock in an exhibition game. In a memorable Texas Tech win against New Mexico in January of 2007, Bob Knight recorded his 880th win as a coach, giving him the most wins in college basketball history.
Visitors to the United Supermarkets Arena for a Red Raider game will be awed by the fan support and the obvious tradition brought to Lubbock by living legend Bob Knight. Attend a concert at the United Supermarkets Arena and you’ll see that it is the premier venue for large events in Lubbock and perhaps all of West Texas.
