The "State of Hockey" finally received a new professional team in 2000 when the Minnesota Wild became the first NHL team in the state since the North Stars packed up and moved to Dallas in 1993. To accommodate the new squad, the Xcel Energy Center was built in the capital of St. Paul, and it has many cutting-edge features that make it one of the most advanced arenas in the United States. The building is located in the center of downtown St. Paul and is easily accessible by public transportation. The facade of the structure is dominated by a transparent glass exterior with four entrances at street level. With more than 18,000 seats, the building is surprisingly cozy and gives the Wild a fantastic home advantage when the arena is at full capacity.

Minnesota residents embraced the return of hockey in 2000, and the Wild certainly didn't disappoint. After starting from scratch as an expansion team, the Wild went through some growing pains in their first two years, but their third year in the league was marked by a breakout performance. The Wild made it all the way to the conference finals in 2003 behind the precision scoring of Dwayne Roloson, Manny Fernandez and Marian Gaborik.

The Wild pulled off improbable upsets against the Colorado Avalanche and the Vancouver Canucks in the first two rounds, becoming the first team in NHL history to win two playoff series while facing a 3-1 deficit. Unfortunately, the Wild's first trip to the conference finals did not end well, as they were swept in four games by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. In recent years, the Wild have put together a competitive roster of young talent and proven veterans, so they should be in the Stanley Cup mix for the foreseeable future.

The Xcel Energy Center also put St. Paul on the map as a spot for world-class live entertainment and large-scale concerts. The venue has hosted many blockbuster tours since its inception, including Coldplay's Viva La Vida tour, Bon Jovi's Lost Highway tour, Bruce Springsteen's Magic tour, Kenny Chesney's Goin' Coastal tour 2011 and many more.

For residents of Minnesota, the Wild are a wonderful return to the state's roots of professional hockey, and inhabitants and tourists alike will continue to enjoy the sports and entertainment that the Xcel Energy Center brings to the state's capital.
