Dodger Stadium Information

  • Location: Los Angeles, California
  • Address: 1000 Elysian Park Avenue
  • Capacity: 56,000
  • Preceded By: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
  • Year Opened: 1962
  • Occupants: Los Angeles Dodgers

After moving from Brooklyn in 1957, the Dodgers came to Los Angeles and began play at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, a stadium which had hosted sports ranging from football to track and field at the 1932 Olympic Games. Ironically, the Dodgers' first game in Los Angeles was against the San Francisco Giants, which joined the ballclub's exodus from New York City. After a few years at the Coliseum, the team moved into their sparkling new home, Dodgers Stadium, in 1962. The 56,000-seat venue is still the largest ballpark by seating capacity in Major League Baseball and the third-oldest active venue behind Wrigley Field and Fenway Park.

Over 125 million spectators have come to visit Dodger Stadium since it opened, and it is one of the most treasured landmarks in Southern California. The massive ballpark is spectacularly maintained, with more than 3,400 trees planted over a span of 300 acres. While the facade of the park resembles the glory days of baseball, the field itself is a technical marvel. In 1995, the Dodgers installed a natural grass field developed by Motz Group, which uses state-of-the-art irrigation techniques to control moisture. The grass is grown in pure sand, which is located over a water-tight plastic layer and houses a vacuum chamber. This can forcibly remove water during heavy rains and reduce ballplayers' risk of injury.

The aesthetics of Dodger Stadium has an enduring quality that continues to be breathtaking. The south-facing view from the stadium gives fans a gorgeous glimpse of downtown Los Angeles, and the entire area is nestled into a hillside that overlooks the city. The ballpark also features a slew of modern restaurants and amenities that keep the venue modern and satiate the needs of hungry fans. While there is plenty of parking available, there are also shuttles that run from downtown Los Angeles to the stadium for those who don't feel like making the trek.

In 2008, the Dodgers announced that they would stay in Dodger Stadium for the next 50 years, with a few improvements along the way. With the ideal climate, a beautiful landscape and one of the largest seating capacities in the Major Leagues, Dodger Stadium will remain a fixture in the National League for years to come. With division championships in 2008 and 2009, the Los Angeles Dodgers are rising stars in the NL West playoff race and look to capture another World Series title in the coming years.

Minute Maid Park Information

  • Year Opened: November 1, 1997

The Houston Astros began their lives as an expansion team in 1960 and were initially dubbed the Houston Colt .45s. While the team's domed stadium was being built, owner Judge Roy Hofheinz commissioned the construction of a one-tier ballpark called Colt Stadium. The building proved to be one of the worst places to play in Major League Baseball, with temperatures regularly climbing into the mid-100s and constantly swarmed with mosquitoes. In 1965, the team changed their name to the Astros and became the first professional baseball team to play indoors at the Astrodome. The domed stadium would be a fixture in the Houston community for decades before the Astros moved into their current home, Minute Maid Park, in 2000.

After going through a few name changes, the Astros finally settled on the moniker Minute Maid Park in 2002 and the new ballpark was a boon for the downtown Houston area. Following the trend of building stadiums in an urban area, Minute Maid Park spawned plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops that have made the area a hotbed of activity on game days. The new ballpark also featured a retractable roof, one of the first of its kind in any professional sport. The $65 million roof can open and close in under 25 minutes and only uses $5 worth of energy to operate each time. With a built-in air conditioning system, Minute Maid Park can adjust to changing weather conditions to ensure a pleasurable fan experience.

Getting to Minute Maid Park is a stress-free experience whether a fan is driving or taking public transportation. Union Station is built into the ballpark, so attendees coming from all corners of Houston can reach the stadium by riding the rails. The Astros made public transportation a priority from the get-go, and this is seen in one of the park's most noticeable features, a replica of a 19th-century locomotive located on a track above left field. This pays homage to Houston's rich railroad history and was designed by the same company that constructed the ballpark's massive retractable roof.
