As quite possibly the most successful franchise in the history of professional sports, The New York Yankees have won an astonishing 27 titles, made 40 appearances in the World Series and boast an extensive list of Hall of Famers that have given the team an air of invincibility at many points in their history. The Yankees would begin their life as the Baltimore Orioles, who moved to New York City in 1903 and would then become the New York Highlanders and would play under that moniker until 1912 when they became the Yankees. The Highlanders would play second fiddle to local teams like the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers throughout much of the early part of the 20th century, but it wasn't until the 1920s that the Yankees first tasted postseason glory.

In 1918, the Yankees secured the rights to future Hall of Famer Babe Ruth, who along with greats like Lou Gehrig, Earl Combs and Waite Hoyt, would win World Series titles in 1923, 1927 and 1928. the team would also win five championships over the course of the 1930s, and another four during the 1940s.

However, what many baseball fans consider to be the golden age of Yankees baseball arrived in the 1950s, when the team won an amazing eight World Series titles over that time span. Featuring all-time greats like Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford and many more, the Yankees created one of the greatest dynasties of all time that continued throughout the 1960s when they would win another four championships. The Yankees would experience another major resurgence in the late 1970s and early '80s, when they would win titles in 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1981, but would experience a major lull throughout the latter part of the decade and the early '90s.

In the mid-'90s, the Yankees would experience a major resurgence thanks to a series of shrewd roster moves and would build yet another dynasty. Thanks to the heroics of Derek Jeter, Paul O'Neill, David Cone, Mariano Rivera and many other role players, the Yankees would manage to capture World Series titles in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003 and again in 2009. While the Yankees' formula has changed in recent decades thanks to one of the largest payrolls in baseball, they continue to be in the hunt year after year and are always on the shortlist of teams who are in the thick of the postseason hunt.
