The Portland Timbers are one of the most beloved soccer programs in all of North America. Professional soccer in Portland, and the Timbers name, can trace its history all the way back to the early 1970’s when a NASL team by the name of the Portland Timbers was created. The team was one of the first professional soccer clubs in the Northwest United States. Throughout the years the Timbers name was passed around different leagues, with different ownership, but the support of the Portland soccer fans just continued to grow and grow. In 2009 it was announced that the Portland Timbers would become the 18th team in MLS, and the club joined the league in 2011. The Timbers quickly found success, finishing the season with the top record in the Western Conference in only their 3rd year as a part of Major league Soccer. Portland would advance to the Western Conference finals in 2013, losing a hard fought series to Real Salt Lake. But more than anything the Timbers have become known for their fan support. The “Timbers Army” is one of the most fanatical fan groups in all of American sports. It is not uncommon for Timbers fans to be camping out, outside of Providence park days before a game. This fanatical following has helped make Timbers games some of the most sought after sporting events in the country and experiencing this energy in person is a must.
