The San Jose Earthquakes is one of the premier professional soccer clubs in North America. The club was founded in 1994, and became one of the 10 charter members of Major League Soccer in 1996. The team was originally known as the San Jose Clash, but were renamed the Earthquakes in October of 1999. For the first 9 years of MLS play the Earthquakes were one of the most dominate teams in the entire league. The Earthquakes made the MLS Cup playoffs in their first year of play, advancing to the quarter-finals. In 2001, San Jose defeated Los Angeles 2-1 to take home their first MLS Cup Championship. Only 2 years later, the Earthquakes advanced to another MLS Cup finals, this time defeating the Chicago Fire 4-2 to win their 2nd MLS championship. Following the 2005 season, the San Jose Earthquakes players and coaches moved to Houston to form the Houston Dynamo. For two years San Jose was without a professional soccer team, but the team was resurrected in 2008 and have quickly returned to their winning ways. The Earthquakes have a proud soccer following and among the most followed soccer teams in the United States.

Starting in the 2015 season, the San Jose Earthquakes home games will be played at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California. Avaya Stadium has a seating capacity of 18,000 fans, and is one of the newest venues in all of Major League Soccer. The Earthquakes previously played their home games at Spartan Stadium, Buck Shaw Stadium, and occasionally at Stanford Stadium and Levi’s Stadium for big games. The opening of Avaya Stadium is a new era for Earthquakes soccer, because the stadium was designed from the ground up to support soccer.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Los Angeles Galaxy

The biggest rivalry for the Earthquakes is with the Los Angeles Galaxy. These California neighbors have been rivals since the inception of MLS. The rivalry is known as the California Clasico and is often considered the most historic rivalry in the history of Major League Soccer. The two teams have played over 70 times. Many famous players have played for both the Earthquakes and the Galaxy, including, Landon Donovan, Craig Waibel, Alejandro Moreno, and Zack Ibsen.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Seattle Sounders FC

Known as the Heritage Cup, this San Jose Earthquakes and Seattle Sounders have one of the most unique rivalries in American Soccer. The Heritage Cup is an annual trophy awarded to teams who are named after previous NASL teams. The rivalry was founded in 2009 and has continue to get more and more competitive each season.
