The San Francisco 49ers started playing football in 1946 in the All-America Football Conference, and after four successful seasons in in the AAFC, the ‘Niners joined the NFL. After making the playoffs just once in its first two decades in the NFL, San Francisco had a run of success in the early 1970s, winning three straight division titles. It wasn’t until the 1980s with Bill Walsh as the head coach that the 49ers would return to the playoffs and be feared by opponents once again. Walsh, with new quarterback Joe Montana under center, turned around the San Francisco franchise in two years time, winning the organization’s first Super Bowl in 1981. Walsh and Montana teamed up to win two more Super Bowls in 1984 and 1988. Walsh’s replacement George Seifert didn’t miss a beat, winning another Super Bowl with Montana in 1989 and then again with quarterback Steve Young in 1994. In all, Walsh and Seifert combined to win 12 division titles in 18 years. San Francisco has won four more division titles since Seifert’s time as head coach. The 49ers have retired the jerseys of 12 players, including both Montana and Young. Check out our San Francisco 49ers History page for more information. 2016 49ers Season Preview
A year after finishing just shy of the Super Bowl, the San Francisco 49ers floundered in 2014, losing 4 of their last 5 games to miss the playoffs. As a result of the late season collapse, the 49ers let head coach Jim Harbaugh leave, and promoted offensive coordinator Jim Tomsula. San Francisco also saw defensive lineman Justin Smith retire unexpectedly, and wide receivers Michael Crabtree and Stevie Johnson leave in free agency. Despite the turnover, the 49ers come into 2015 with one of the most talented offenses in the NFL, behind quarterback Colin Kaepernick and receivers Anquan Bolden, and Torrey Smith. Running back Carlos Hyde had a breakout season in 2014 and should continue this rise as one of the top big play running backs in the NFL. The NFC West is without a doubt the top division in the NFC heading into the 2015 season, with the 49ers, Seahawks, and Cardinals all having legitimate shots at making the playoffs. Look for the 49ers to rebound in 2015 and be back in the title hunt once again. Top non-division games on the San Francisco 49ers 2015 schedule include home games against the Cowboys, Packers, and Ravens.

The 49ers are one of the top draws in the NFL today and a home game at Levi’s Stadium has the energy of a rock concert. San Francisco is led by quarterback Colin Kaepernick, but has a roster full of marquee players. The 49ers play an exciting brand of football that is high scoring and includes lots of deep routes and long passes. They have a strong home winning record, partially due to the frenzied atmosphere created by their fans. Seeing a 49ers home game in-person is absolutely worth the price of admission, and an experience that will live on well past the event.

49ers vs. Cowboys
It is not often that two teams that don’t play in the same division or are close in proximity can be rivals, but for these two iconic franchises, it is only natural for this to be a rivalry. With consecutive contests for the NFC championship and both teams taking their turn having dynasties, these two storied organizations have often met when the stakes are at the highest.
A relative new rivalry that was established after the NFL division realignment in 2002, these two teams are quickly becoming one of the better matchups in the NFL. Adding to this new intense rivalry is both head coaches were conference rivals when they were head coaches in college and now they get to face each other twice a year.
This rivalry started in 1950 and peaked while both teams played in the same states. However, still playing two times a year and meeting over 125 times, this rivalry has been voted as a top 10 rivalry by some publications. The closeness in the all-time series and games being heated every time they meet has only added to this great rivalry.
49ers in the Super Bowl, NFC Championship and NFL Playoffs
The 49ers have established themselves as one of the premier franchises since they joined the NFL in 1949. With 4+ Super Bowl titles and 5+ NFC championships, the 49ers have set the standard for success in the NFL. With one of the greatest quarterbacks in Joe Montana and arguably the best wide receiver in Jerry Rice donning the 49ers uniform, it is hard to match the legacy that San Francisco has created. The 49ers have made the playoffs over 20 times and will only add to that number.
