The Buccaneers joined the NFL in 1976, and have had varying levels of success throughout the franchise's history. The Buccaneers went winless in their first season in the NFL, but turned things around relatively quickly, making the playoffs for the first time in 1979, then again in 1981 and 1982. After reaching the playoffs in 1982, Tampa Bay went on a run of 14 straight seasons with a losing record. In 1997 the Buccaneers turned things around once again, ending the run of futility by making the playoffs. In 2002, after three straight playoff appearances, Tampa Bay got over the hump, reaching the Super Bowl in head coach Jon Gruden's first season at the helm, and defeating Gruden's former team the Oakland Raiders. Since the team's Super Bowl run, the Buccaneers have made the playoffs just twice more—in 2005 and 2007. Tampa Bay has retired just one number—Lee Roy Selmon's No. 63. 2016 Buccaneers Season Preview

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were not a very good football team in 2014, but come into 2015 with maybe as much hype as any team in the NFL. The Buccaneers used the first pick in the 2015 NFL Draft to bring in Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Jameis Winston, who they believe will be the face of the Buccaneers for years to come. The addition of Winston instantly makes Tampa Bay’s offense into a significantly better team, with the very talented wide receiver duo of Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson. Tampa Bay drafted offensive players with 6 of their 7 draft picks in 2015, with 3 of the 6 players slated to start. The Bucs will be young in 2015, but the excitement is back in Tampa Bay and the team should be increasingly competitive as the season moves on and have a great chance to more than double their win total from a season ago. Top non-division games on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2015 schedule include game at home against the Cowboys, Giants, and Bears.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Rivals

Buccaneers vs. Falcons

One of the more heated rivalries in the NFL, the aggressive play by both teams usually lasts after the whistle has been blown. These two teams have combined for over 2,000 yards in penalties during the 10+ years the NFC South has been in existence. The most memorable game that demonstrates the brutality of this series came in 2003 when the Bucs racked up 17 penalties.

This rivalry dates back to 1977 and has been played over 40 times. Both teams have combined for over 10 division titles and have each won Super Bowls. The series has gone back and forth throughout the years with no team winning more than six times in a row. As both teams continue to fight for division titles, this rivalry will only get better in the years to come.

Buccaneers in the Super Bowl, NFC Championship and in the NFL Playoffs

The Buccaneers have won more than 5 division titles and have made the playoffs 9+ times in their history that began in 1976. The Bucs won an NFC Championship and a Super Bowl in 2002. As still a relative young franchise in NFL circles, Tampa Bay will only continue to add to the history they have started.
