The Redskins franchise began playing football in 1932 as the Boston Braves. The following year the nickname Redskins was adopted and in 1937 the club moved to Washington. The ‘Skins found immediate success in their new home, winning two NFL championships in 1937 and 1942. Through 1945 Washington was one of the most feared teams in the NFL, winning six division titles in 10 years. After the mid-1940s however, the Redskin franchise endured a horrendous stretch of 26 years without a playoff appearance. Washington broke the streak when they returned to the playoffs in 1971, then built on their success by reaching the Super Bowl the following season. Though moderately successful through the rest of the 1970s, it was the hiring of Joe Gibbs as head coach that pushed the Redskins over the hump. Gibbs’ Washington teams made the playoffs eight times in his 12 seasons during his first tour as head coach, winning three Super Bowls—1982, 1987 and 1991. Since the end of Gibbs’ first stint as head coach, the Redskins have made the playoffs just four times in 20 years. The Redskins have honored 44 coaches, players and officials in their Ring of Fame. 2015 Redskins Season Preview
The Washington Redskins struggled through another injury plagued season in 2014. Quarterback Robert Griffin missed most of the year, and back up Kirk Cousins also missed time with injury. Add those injuries to the inconsistent play of the Redskins defense, and the result was a 4-12 season. Much of the Redskins hopes for the 2015 season will be placed on the shoulders of Robert Griffin. If the recently maligned quarterback can play like he did his rookie year, the Redskins could quickly have one of the most dynamic attacks in the NFC. The wide receiver tandem of Pierre Garcon, and DeSean Jackson are as good as any in the NFC, and running back Alfred Morris is a big play threat out of the backfield. The biggest move that Washington made in the offseason was bringing in offensive tackle Brandon Scherff, who is expected to start at right tackle. The good news for the Redskins is the NFC East is projected to be one of the weaker divisions in the NFC. The bad news is quarterbacks with a history of injury seldom return to their former selves for long. Top games on the Washington Redskins 2015 schedule include, at New England, at home against the Saints, and at Dallas to finish the season.
