The Columbus Blue Jackets entered the NHL in 2000 as an expansion team, and they are the first and only professional sports franchise to play in Ohio's capital. The team has only made the playoffs once in its short history, but the squad has improved drastically over the past few years and Blue Jackets fans should expect to see prime time hockey in the coming years.

The Blue Jackets lone playoff run occurred in 2009 after the team signed free agents Kristian Huselius and Mike Commodore to improve their scoring and defensive opportunities. Along with goalie Steve Mason, the Calder Trophy winner, the team had an intriguing mix of young talent and veterans and looked ready to make a serious run in the playoffs.

The team finished with a record of 41-31-10 and would slip into the playoffs for the first time in their history. The Blue Jackets' playoff series against the Detroit Red Wings was the first game of the Stanley Cup playoffs to ever be played in the state of Ohio. Unfortunately for Blue Jackets fans, the Red Wings brought their A-game and swept the Blue Jackets in four games.

The Blue Jackets have steadily built a contending roster over the past few years and look to be the cream that rises to the top in the Western Conference to finally notch their first playoff win.
