Known as the unofficial steak capital of the United States, this major Nebraska city serves as a gateway to the West, connecting the lowlands to the High Plains and prairie lands. This central location naturally made Omaha one of the most reliable transportation hubs in the country, thanks to the emerging railroad industry during the 1850s (around the founding of Omaha). As a result, several Fortune 500 companies have moved into the area, including TD Ameritrade, Werner Enterprises and Union Pacific Corporation. Although it might not seem like there is a whole lot to do in Omaha, the tourism industry is booming - especially due to the fact that the NCAA College World Series takes place here every year, attracting tailgaters and proud parents from all over the country.
Many may not realize how prevalent sports are in Omaha culture, especially when it comes to baseball. Home to the University of Nebraska, which has practically every sport under the sun, Omaha is host to the TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby every year at TD Ameritrade Park. Aside from NCAA football, there is also an indoor team known as the Omaha Beef, which is a tribute to the city's rich history. In 2010, it was announced that Omaha will soon be home to a new expansion team in the United Football League, which could be extremely beneficial to the city as a whole.
Another popular college in Omaha is Creighton University, which is most known for basketball, baseball and soccer. Ice hockey is also huge in this area, which fosters two prominent teams - Omaha Lancers (United States Hockey League) and the Mavericks (University of Nebraska). The sports culture is further enhanced by the fact that many famous sports figures have hailed from the city, including Bob Gibson (baseball hall-of-famer), Gregg Olson and Bob Boozer (NBA star and 1960 summer Olympics gold medalist).
For those who would rather take in some scenery and experience nature can enjoy the many recreational areas that lie on the outskirts of the city. Among these, Dodge Park is perhaps the most popular, as it contains a dock along the Platte River, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to go for a dip or ride some jet skis. There are also more than 80 miles of trails for hikers and bicyclists to take advantage of in the surrounding Omaha area.
Anyone who wants to be surprised by the landmarks of the Great Plains will surely fall in love with the Omaha, Nebraska area.
