The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the original Major League Baseball franchises that trace their roots back to 1883 when they were dubbed the Philadelphia Quakers. The first major ballpark built for the team was the Baker Bowl, opened in Northern Philadelphia in 1887, and seated nearly 18,000 fans. The Phillie's next venue came in 1909 when the team moved into Connie Mack Stadium, also known as Shibe Park. The team's odyssey would continue in 1971 when the squad moved into Veterans Stadium, which they shared with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles. Finally, in 2004, the Phillies had a venue to call their own dubbed Citizens Bank Park, which has been the site of the team's resurgence over the late 2000s.
Citizens Bank Park is one of many cutting-edge ballparks built on the East Coast with a distinctive bowl-shape meant to pay homage to the Baker Bowl and Connie Mack Stadium. The spacious open-air concourses span the perimeter of the venue and give fans a view of the action from anywhere in the park. There are more than 20,000 parking spaces for those who'd like to drive to the stadium, but it is also linked up to Philadelphia's Broad Street subway line and many other forms of public transportation.
The Phillies took great pains to make Citizens Bank Park a family-friendly atmosphere, and there are games and activities for all ages. For children, eight years and younger is the Phanatic Phun Zone, a sprawling soft play area with slides, ball pits and places to climb. Outside of the park is Ashburn Alley, an extensive complex that features a retail store, sit-down restaurants, the Phillies Wall of Fame, and interactive baseball games for young children. This is also the place to be before the first pitch is thrown - there is a special platform above the bullpen area to allow fans to see pitchers from both teams warm-up before the day's action begins.
Ever since the park opened, the Phillies have begun one of the greatest turnarounds in MLB history, which was given an exclamation point in 2008 with their first World Series title since 1980. After being NL East champions for five years running, the Phillies show no signs of relinquishing their status as one of the most dangerous squads in the National League.
