Although it lies directly in the center of the nearly uninhabitable Sonora Desert, Phoenix is known as the heart and soul of Arizona. Visitors might actually be surprised by how much the desert wildlife thrives amid the tumbleweeds and cacti of the harsh desert that surrounds the sprawling urban area. Even though the outskirts of the city, with the exception of Scottsdale, might seem relatively barren, visitors would be surprised by the sheer size of the downtown area. For this reason, Phoenix is also the sports hub of the southwest.
Phoenix is home to Arizona State University and Grand Canyon University, making it popular for those who enjoy nothing more than a tailgating session in the crisp autumn air. Visitors can also find professional games for practically any sport they can think of, including hockey, football, basketball and baseball.
The Arizona Diamondbacks aren't the only team Phoenix has to offer on the ballfield. This is perhaps one of the largest cities in the nation when it comes to baseball, as several minor league teams - like the Arizona League Angels, Arizona League Cubs, Arizona League Giants and the Arizona League Padres - are prevalent.
Phoenix is also the hotspot for extreme sports such as skydiving and cross-country running, as the surrounding desert landscape and sunny weather are ideal for a wide variety of athletes. Those who prefer sports that are a little more leisurely can have their share of fun in the Arizona sun as well. Golf, for instance, is incredibly popular in the Phoenix area, which contains some of the most reputable courses in the United States, including the legendary Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa.
This city even has a healthy dose of sights and pleasures for nature enthusiasts, including an astronomy museum downtown, as well as the Sonora Desert Museum - which has a nature trail that takes visitors through a meandering hillside that's embellished with a forest of cacti. Other nearby sights are Goldfield (a preserved Wild West saloon), Apache Trail (hiking and camping) and Slide Rock State Park.
Anyone who doubts the quality and quantity of things to do in Phoenix, Arizona will be in for a big surprise. Aside from eye-balling a few rattlesnakes or scorpions (from a distance, of course), visitors can also experience some of the most accommodating hotels and resorts in the nation - not to mention the abundance of savory authentic Mexican cuisine!
