The Talking Stick Resort Arena was built in 1992 as the new home of the Phoenix Suns, who had played their games at the old Veterans Memorial Coliseum since 1968. The arena sits in the heart of downtown Phoenix, and the ingenious layout of the interstate system makes it very easy to come and go from the area. The Talking Stick Resort Arena is also one of the few professional sports structures that uses renewable energy to power the structure from a series of solar panels. From the day the building opened, it was one of the most cutting-edge facilities in the NBA with a capacity of 18,422 and state-of-the-art sound and video boards. Best of all, the Talking Stick Resort Arena sits in the posh Cooper District filled with bars and eateries so fans will always feel like they're in the middle of the action.
Fellow NBA owners scoffed at the idea of basketball in Phoenix, but the Suns managed to put together a strong front office and is one of the most respected organizations in the NBA. They would make the NBA Finals in 1976 and have frequent playoff appearances throughout the late '70s and '80s. However, it wasn't until the construction of the Talking Stick Resort Arena that the team truly hit the big time. The team traded for future Hall of Famer Charles Barkley and he went on to win MVP honors in his first season as a Sun.
The Suns surged to the NBA Finals in 1993, but fell victim to the juggernaut Chicago Bulls in seven games. Over recent years, the Suns have boasted the strength of Amar'e Stoudamire, Steve Nash and a host of talented role players to be a tough out in the NBA playoffs.
The Talking Stick Resort Arena is also the place to be when a concert, convention or family show is in town. The venue has hosted such successful tours as The Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden tour, AC/DC's Black Ice Tour, Roger Waters' The Wall Live tour and Elton John & Leon Russell's The Union Tour.
The city of Phoenix is one of the most exciting places in the country, and the Talking Stick Resort Arena always seems to have a thrilling sporting event or an engaging musical performance on its calendar.
