As sad as some Pittsburgh Penguins fans were when their hallowed Mellon Arena was replaced with the incredibly modern Consol Energy Center (opened in 2010), they quickly got used to all of the new amenities the building had in store. With more than 18,000 seats, the venue has nearly 2,000 more seats than its predecessor and is jam-packed with technological breakthroughs for both young and old. The Consol Energy Center boasts an interactive kids zone where children can play a few hockey games on a Nintendo Wii or put on their best "game face" in the Penguins photo exhibit. There are plenty of bars and restaurants that surround the station and fans can never be too far away from the action with 800 high-definition TVs located all around the structure.
The Pittsburgh Penguins began play in 1967 and are actually a revival of the Pittsburgh Pirates - an NHL team in the 1920s that folded due to the Great Depression. The Penguins have achieved sustained success throughout their existence and many Hall of Famers have donned the black and gold. The Penguins' first run at the Stanley Cup took place in 1991 when the team had a bevy of young talent and savvy veterans led by Mario Lemieux, Mark Recchi and Jaromir Jagr. The Penguins beat the Minnesota North Stars in 1991 and the Chicago Blackhawks in 1992 to capture back-to-back NHL titles.
The Penguins' great renaissance back to the top of the hockey world came with the arrival of Sidney Crosby in 2005. The Penguins quickly surrounded him with talented players like Evegni Malkin, Jordan Staal, Petr Sykora and Marc Andre-Fleury. In 2009, the Penguins were pitted against the Detroit Red Wings, who had knocked off the Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals a year earlier. The Penguins would get their revenge in a seven game series for yet another championship win.
The Consol Energy Center has also become the preferred spot in Pittsburgh to catch a concert or live event. The arena's first performance featured former Beatle Paul McCartney's Up and Coming Tour 2010, and it has hosted successful tours such as Elton John's Greatest Hits tour, Lady Gaga's The Monster Ball tour and The Eagles' Long Road out of Eden tour in its short history.
The Consol Energy Center has certainly lived up to the hype as one of the most technologically advanced concert and sporting venues in the country, and Penguins fans have plenty to look forward to in the coming years.
