A lot of childhood friends grow up and form a band. Few them would end up quite so successful as the one childhood friends Mick Jagger and Keith Richards put together. A shared interest in the blues rock of Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters shaped the band's early sounds. Early addition Brian Jones coined the band's name while looking at a nearby Muddy Waters LP.

1962 marked the first appearance of "the Rollin' Stones" at the Marquee Club in London. At the time they played covers of Chicago blues. Their first single was a cover of Chuck Berry's "Come On", which rose to #21 in the UK charts. Savvy management positioned the Stones as an alternative to the then more clean-cut image of The Beatles.

The Stones found success with covers early in their career, helping grow their popularity while the writing of Jagger and Richards coalesced. Their early albums featured a mix of covers and some original song writing. All were successful, with 3 #1's on the US and UK charts by 1965. The release of Out of Our Heads delivered the writing team their first international #1: "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction".

The band's success continued through the 60s and into the 70s, generating album after album that was never far from the top of the charts. The band's "bad boy" image developed and solidified, something studios gladly capitalized on. Trouble with recreational drug use let to legal problems, something the band would contend with more than once. The recording of their only self-produced album, Their Satanic Majesties Request, was particularly effected, and is considered by Richards to be "a load of crap."

The 70's ended on a high note, with the release of Some Girls, the group's best selling original album. Spending 88 weeks at the top of the US charts, and going Platinum six times, the album includes some of the bands radio staples, "Miss You" and "Beast of Burden." The early 80's saw the band's success continue with the albums Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You, the latter of which spawned the one of the Stones most identifiable singles: "Start Me Up."

The band, which had been going virtually non-stop since the 60s, began to slow the pace a bit during the remainder of the 80s and 90s. The number of years between albums and tours began to stretch, though those albums were still successful. In particular 1989's Steel Wheels and 1994's Voodoo Lounge, both of which were accompanied by long live tours.

In the opening decade of the 2000's, the band released only 1 album, 2005's A Bigger Bang. It too featured a lengthy tour. The band recently celebrated it's 50th anniversary, and while it has slowed down a bit, certainly is not stopping. The Stones are part of the DNA of rock and roll, and still put on one of the best stage shows any rock fan could want. Mick Jagger's moves have been copied by many a rising rock star, so see the original and the best when the Stones come to your town.
