The tournament was played at many of the biggest venues in the United States, including Sports Authority Filed, CenturyLink Field and Rose Bowl. 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup Preview

The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football, or CONCACAF, holds a bi-yearly tournament for the countries it represents to find its champion. The competition is broken up into three zones –North American, Central American and Caribbean—and those zones’s advancing teams divided into three groups.  For the 2011 edition, the teams playing for the Gold Cup are Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Cuba (Group A); Honduras, Guatemala, Jamaica, Grenada (Group B); and USA, Canada, Panama and Guadeloupe (Group C).

The Gold Cup is usually held in the United States, with Mexico sometimes co-hosting. This year, however, is all on American soil. Many of the fields used are primarily for Major League Soccer teams, like New York’s Red Bull Arena and Los Angeles’ Home Depot Center.

Going in to the tournament, the biggest bets to advance are both Mexico in Group A and the US in Group C, thanks to their previous matches with their group adversaries. Other teams that are on the rise that might surprise are Honduras, which posted a 4-2-1 record against CONCACAF opponents leading up to the tourney, and Jamaica, which had a perfect 3-0-0 record in group stages.

Whatever draws come up, the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup will be sure to bring soccer (or futbol) to the next stage in America. With the eyes on the next World Cup, teams will be sure to bring their A-Game to the pitch to show the world that they’re ready not only to hoist the Gold Cup, but the 2014 World Cup in Rio De Janiero as well.

CONCACAF Gold Cup Groups

Group A

  • 1. Honduras
  • 2. Costa Rica
  • 3. French Guiana
  • 4. Canada

Canada still remains the only other team not named the United States or Mexico to win the tournament with one championship win in the 2000 Gold Cup. Group A of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup has some other strong teams with Costa Rica and Honduras making multiple appearances in previous years, while French Guiana will make its historic first showing at the Gold Cup this year. Which teams make it out of Group A is hard to say.

Group B

  • 1. USA
  • 2. Panama
  • 3. Martinique
  • 4. Haiti or Nicaragua

The host country/overall favorite to win it all is in Group B, with the United States Men's National Team. The U.S. has seen a major bump in the last few years and will be looking to repeat their Gold Cup championship from 2013 and earn their sixth overall. Panama looks to be the other contender coming out of Group B and will look to build off their runner-up performance in the 2013 Gold Cup with their No. 2 position in the group going into the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Group C

  • 1. Mexico
  • 2. El Salvador
  • 3. Curacao
  • 4. Jamaica

As defending champions from the 2015 Gold Cup, Mexico looks to be the class of the 2017 Gold Cup Group C. Predicting which other teams will make it out of the group is tough. Jamaica is probably the most accomplished of the three remaining teams, as the runner-up of the previous CONCACAF Gold Cup against Mexico. El Salvador has been tough in the Gold Cup in since 1963 and Curacao will have a lot to prove as their first showing in the Gold Cup since 1973.
