The UEFA European Championship is the biggest tournament for national football teams in UEFA, the governing body of football in Europe. The tournament has been held every four years since 1960, and the winner of the tournament qualifies to play in the FIFA Confederations Cup. The tournament has been won by nine difference countries, with Germany and Spain winning three titles each. Spain is the only country to win two consecutive European championships, winning the last two tournaments.
The tournament has grown over the years, as it started off with only four teams participating and the 2016 version will have 24. This is a jump from 16 teams in 2012. Teams qualify by reaching late round in qualifying tournaments or, like France in 2016, get an automatic bid as they are the host country. The tournament will now consist of six groups of four teams, followed by knock-out play. Only the winner and runner up of each group automatically advances, as well as the four best third-placed teams to give us an even 16. There is also no third-place game for the teams that lose in the semi-finals like there is in the World Cup. Score with TicketCity - the place to go for 2016 Euros soccer tickets.
