Manchester United FC is a professional football (soccer) club based in Manchester, England. The club was founded as Newton Health LYR football (soccer) club back in 1878 and was known as Newton Heath until 1902 when the name was changed to Manchester United. Manchester United competes in the English Premier League, which is the top professional football (soccer) league in the U.K. and is one top professional sports leagues in the world. With over a dozen Premier League titles since 1992, Manchester United has been the most successful franchise in the Premier League, with the next closest team winning less than half the titles as Manchester United.
The club’s nickname is the “Red Devils,” which dates back to the 1930’s, and the team has incorporating the devil in the team’s logo ever since. In 1968, Manchester United became the first English football (soccer) club to take home a Champions League (European Cup) title, a feat the Red Devils have repeated on multiple occasions. Manchester United also took up the FIFA Club World Cup in 2008, making them one of the few teams in the world to have claimed a Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and FIFA Club World Cup titles. Few sports teams in the world have received as much acclaim or support as Manchester United, and the Red Devils are consistently ranked in the top 5 most valuable sports franchises in the world.
