The Richmond Ballet began as a small, private company known as Ballet Impromptu in 1957. Founded by Marjorie Fay Underhill and Robert Watkins Jr, the ballet first expanded in 1975 with the addition of the School of Richmond Ballet. By 1984 it was the first professional company in Virginia. In 1990, Governor Douglas Wilder designed it the State Ballet of Virginia.
The Richmond Ballet toured internationally, performing in London and New York. The organization commissioned a larger number of new ballets, averaging one a year since the early 90s. These are performed during a season that includes classic ballets and seasonal performances such as The Nutcracker.
Main stage productions usually occur in Richmond's Carpenter Theatre. The Ballet's main facility on Canal Street also includes the Studio Theater performance spaces. The 250 seat theatre provides a smaller, more intimate space for patrons.
