The story of con-man-turned-consultant Frank William Abagnale, Jr. impressed Steven Spielberg enough to create a film based on his life. Catch Me If You Can, the title of Abagnale's autobiography, lent its name to the 2002 film which starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Abagnale and Tom Hanks as the FBI agent on his tail. Playwright Terrence McNally, author of Kiss of the Spider Woman and Ragtime, adapted the story into a musical in 2005.
The musical version of Catch Me If You Can is similar to the film, and features music and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman. Wittman and Shaiman have experience with film adaptations, having penned the music in the hit Broadway version of Hairspray. With this strong creative team at the helm, and under the veteran direction of Jack O'Brien, Catch Me If You Can opened April 10, 2011 at the Neil Simon Theatre.
The musical opens with Frank William Abagnale, Jr. cornered in an airport by FBI agent Carl Hanratty. Frank convinces Carl to let him tell his story for the people at the airport before he's taken into custody, kicking off a look at how young Frank ended up being such a successful con-man. We watch his broken home life lead into lucrative check fraud for Frank before he ends up conning his way into a job at Pan Am as a copilot.
Though a pilot's life was good for Frank, he grows bored and finds his way into the medical profession. As Doctor Conners at Atlanta General Hospital, Frank end up falling in love with a nurse named Brenda Strong. Frank has just about convinced Brenda's family he's right for marriage when Hanratty finally starts closing in, resulting in a return to the opening scene at the airport where Frank is finally captured. All ends well, though, after release from jail Hanratty asks Frank to help catch other criminals with his "unique" skill set.
The Broadway production earned four Tony nominations, including one for Best Musical. It took home one for Norbert Leo Butz's performance as Agent Hanratty. The show's engagement at the Neil Simon Theatre is open-ended, and a Touring show is planned, providing the opportunity for audiences across the nation to see this fun, stylish musical comedy.
