Controversial when it first appeared on Broadway, Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, may not pack quite the same counter-cultural punch today, but it remains a powerful, dramatic snapshot the late 1960's in the United States. Hair would become the defining example of the emerging "rock musical" genre on Broadway, and be among the first to prominently feature a multiracial cast.

Hair is the story of the "tribe" and its leader, Claude, a group of bohemian youths in New York City. They are hippies of the "Age of Aquarius" who are into drugs, free love, and political activism against the Vietnam war. Claude has been drafted and is having doubts about simply burning his draft card as most the tribe has done. He is unsure of continuing his day-to-day existence on the streets. Eventually he has to decide to stay with the tribe or accept the draft and be sent to Vietnam.

James Rado and Gerome Ragni based the characters on themselves and the people they'd met in New York City. The original version of the play opened off-Broadway at The Public Theatre after a tumultuous process that saw director Gerald Freedman quit and later return before the opening. Rado and Ragni revised the book for the Broadway opening, notably changing the character of Claude from a space alien to a human. Many Broadway theatres passed on the production due to the content. It was only when anti-war businessman Michael Butler, who purchased the rights, used his influence that the Biltmore Theatre's owner allowed it to be shown.

The original Broadway production of Hair opened April 29, 1968 at the Biltmore Theatre (now the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre). It ran 1,750 performances before closing on July 1, 1972. While nominated for 2 Tony Awards in 1969, it lost both to the musical 1776. Hair toured extensively in the following years via nine different productions. It opened in the Shaftesbury Theatre in London's West End September 27, 1968 where it played 1,997 performances.

Hair was revived on Broadway in 2008 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The production won a Tony Award for Best Musical Revival. Since first appearing in 1967, the musical's iconic songs have spawned a number of top 10 hits for many artists. Modern national tours still cross the country with great regularity, allowing anyone to see this classic piece of American theatre.
