Hamilton, debuting on August 2015 on Broadway at the famous Richard Rogers Theatre, has taken audiences and the theater world by storm becoming an instant hit. Hamilton was inspired by the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton, which tells the story of the founding father who came from an orphaned childhood to shaping America as George Washington’s right-hand man. As creator and star of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda uses this hip-hop musical to take the audience on an exciting journey through Alexander Hamilton’s life from a nobody to an American hero, a loving husband caught in the country’s first sex scandal, and a powerful force in American history. Accompanying Hamilton in this epic American story are the prolific figures, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Eliza Hamilton, and lifelong friend Aaron Burr. The vision and passion from Miranda developed this political mastermind in a way like no other, giving Hamilton the reputation as “the most exciting and significant musical of the decade” from critics. Beginning July 11th, 2016 the role of Alexander Hamilton will be assumed by Javier Munoz due to Miranda’s decision to step down as the lead. Munoz worked with Miranda when the role of Hamilton was created, so he is expected to take the lead to new heights.
Hamilton has proven to take audiences back to the 1700s for a unique, captivating and contemporary take on one of the most important times in American history - following the story of the Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton. The Broadway production was nominated for a record-setting 16 Tony Awards, winning 11, and Hamilton also received the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Hamilton - Musical at Richard Rodgers Theatre Address: 226 W 47th St, New York, NY 10036
The Richard Rodgers Theatre began its life as Chanin's 46th Street Theatre, named after the construction moguls Irwin and Henry Chanin, who built the structure in 1924. The venue later dropped the Chanin title and remained the 46th Street Theatre before it was purchased in 1982 by the Nederlander Organization, which renamed it the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 1990. The building was designed by famed Broadway architect Herbert J. Krapp, who came up with the novel idea of having the rear orchestra seats slope upwards so that they eventually reached the mezzanine level. This allowed every person in the 1,319-member audience to have a clear view of the stage. The building features elegant Beaux-Arts style with impressive arches near the entryway and intricate wood and plasterwork throughout the performance hall. The Richard Rodgers Theatre has enjoyed a colorful history and yet is still one of the prime locations in New York City to catch an unforgettable musical comedy.
