Jersey Boys is one of the most critically-acclaimed musicals of the 2000s and has surged to popularity ever since it opened its doors at the August Wilson Theatre in 2005. The musical tells the story of the formation, rise and breakup of The Four Seasons, members of the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and one of the most popular rock and roll acts before the Beatles took the country by storm. Jersey Boys is split into four seasons and each one is told by a member of the band who reflects on the varying perspectives of the group. The show starts off with Spring, and is narrated by Tommy DeVito. He explains the formation of the band, from a struggling variety group with Nick DeVito and Nick Massi to meeting up with Frankie Valli and teaching him everything he knows. After struggling to find a fourth member of the band, another Jersey boy named Joe Pesci introduced the group to Bob Gaudio. Gaudio takes over the narration in the second act (Summer) and showcases the band's rise to the top of the music world. While the band continued to flourish, the summer season shows the strain that touring puts on the band members' families and the rigors of stardom.
Nick Massi opens up the Fall act, and it shows how the band begins to grow apart as they become jealous of one another's success and fall into debt. Due to Tommy's exorbitant debt in Las Vegas, the group is forced to tour as a trio, which finally brings about Massi's departure. Frankie Valli takes over the final act, Winter, which talks about his foray into a solo career and picking up the pieces of a musical group that had fallen apart. Throughout the play, a slew of Four Seasons hits are played, which helps to further illustrate the growth and dynamic nature of the band. Ever since its premiere in 2005, Jersey Boys has become a runaway hit that is still enthralling audiences years later. The musical would win four Tony Awards in 2006, including Best Musical, Actor (Musical) and Lighting Design. Jersey Boys has resulted in many successful tours around the United States, as well as countries like New Zealand, Australia, England and Canada. The musical's examination of American pop culture has made it one of the most beloved musicals in Broadway history and continues to pack the house at the August Wilson Theatre throughout the year.
