It took fourteen years for the musical comedy Sister Act to be made into a musical comedy for the stage, but that journey, while long, was perhaps inevitable, as the hit, feel-good film translated into a hit, feel-good musical as soon at it debuted. The musical opened in 2006 at the Pasadena Playhouse and went on to become the highest grossing show in the Playhouse's history. Despite the solid box office and great reviews, it would take another five years for the show to make it to Broadway.
Sister Act's story is that of Deloris Van Cartier, and her transformation from lounge singer to nun on the run. Deloris witnesses her mobster boyfriend and his goons committing murder, feels to the police, and ends up in witness protection. That protection is the The Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mother of Perpetual Faith, a convent run by a stern Mother Superior who suggests Deloris will be changing her ways while she is in residence.
Deloris ends up working with the choir, and her more modern take on the classics transforms it into a powerful force in the church. This upsets the Mother Superior, who was quite happy with the way things were before Deloris arrived. The choir is eventually invited to perform for the Pope, but not before they deal with Deloris' Ex, Shank, and Mother Superior warms up to her after all.
Sister Act arrived on Broadway in April of 2011 at the Broadway Theatre, where it met with an enthusiastic reception. With music by famed Disney composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin) and under the direction of Jerry Zaks, the production earned 5 Tony nominations, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score.
Sister Act promises to be on Broadway for some time to come, providing great music and laughs to packed houses. Don't miss this great modern musical, get your tickets today!
