Many may be familiar with the Addams Family from the short lived 60s sitcom, but the source for all of the many adaptations were the comics of Charles Addams. They appeared as single panel cartoons in The New Yorker from 1938 to 1988, when Addams past away.

Rights to put the eccentric family on Broadway were secured in 2007. It would take just a couple short years to get to the first tryouts in Chicago. Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice wrote the book for the musical, the same team that wrote the book for the hit Jersey Boys.

Andrew Lippa wrote the music and lyrics for the show, for which he received a Best Original Score Tony nomination. While most of the score is original, fans of the catchy title tune from the original sitcom should be relieved to find it included here as well.

The Addams Family is the story of a single, hectic evening in the family's mansion. Growing up, daughter Wedensday brings her "straight-laced" boyfriend Lucas and his perfectly normal, Midwestern parents, Mal and Alice, home to have dinner. Wedensday and Lucas have a big announcement, but that's thrown off track when Alice accidently drinks a potion the jealous Pugsly intended for Wedensday.

Mal and Alice's marriage is suddenly on the rocks, and it's up to the Addams Family to put things right. In the end Mal and Alice reunite, as do Wedensday and Lucas, and the two families celebrate.

The original Broadway show opened April 8, 2010 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre after a month of previews. The show received 2 Tony nominations and 8 Drama Desk nominations, winning 1 Drama Desk award. The show runs to regularly packed houses on Broadway, and a touring company brings the fun and fantasy of the Addams Family to venues around the states. Get your tickets today!
