Stand-up comedian and frequent National Public Radio contributor Mike Birbiglia's career has taken off over the past several years, but his story of success is very closely emulated by those in his field. Birbigilia was born in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, in 1978 and is best-known for his popular blog, My Secret Public Journal. In addition to his regular appearances on This American Life and The Bob & Tom Show, Birbiglia has starred in feature-length films, worked as a writer and has refined his craft of comedy throughout the years to become a major draw on the comedy circuit.
As a teenager at Georgetown University, Birbiglia joined the university's Improv Troupe and won the Funniest Person on Campus Award as a sophomore. During his time in the nation's capitol, Birbiglia worked at small clubs and refined his act at bars and night clubs before earning his big break during Comedy Central's national stand-up competition, Laugh Riots. While Birbiglia finished as a semi-finalist, it gave him the confidence and the wherewithal to pursue his dream to become a successful stand-up comedian.
After a move to New York City, Birbiglia hit the road and began touring around America, and even scored a gig at the renowned Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, Canada in the early 2000s. During this time frame, Birbiglia also began his segments on NPR and started to achieve the national recognition he craved. In 2001, Birbiglia appeared on Comedy Central's Premium Blend and also had a stint on the USO Comedy Tour. In 2002, he made his first appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman.
Over the course of the 2000s, Birbiglia would record a variety of Comedy Central specials, as well as a series of successful comedy albums. However, during the latter part of the decade, Birbigilia began to explore new mediums for his comedy, and in 2008 he opened the off-Broadway production, "Sleepwalk With Me." The one-man show at the Bleecker Street Theater was named the Show of the Year by Time Out New York and was critically acclaimed by many in the Broadway community.
After the successful debut of his Broadway show, Birbiglia brought the production to the big screen in 2012 with the feature film debut of Sleepwalk with Me. The movie won a variety of film festival awards all over the country and has been a critical and commercial success.
