The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum was built in 1972 and is the only home that the New York Islanders have ever had. Located in Uniondale, New York, on Long Island, the venue is easily accessible from myriad routes around Manhattan and surrounding areas. The venue has been the site of presidential campaign rallies for Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, it hosted Wrestlemania in 1986 and has been the site of countless concerts and family shows over the years. While the concrete exterior isn't as jaw-dropping as other modern arenas, the old building has a special place in the hearts of Islander fans who remember the team's glory days of the early 1980s.
The Islanders entered the NHL as an expansion team in 1972 and became New York's second professional hockey team and the only New York franchise to be located in Long Island. The franchise slowly built a competitive roster that became a force to be reckoned with. In an unprecedented run, the Islanders won the Stanley Cup every year from 1980-1983 and became only the third team in NHL history to win four consecutive titles. These exciting Islanders teams featured a mix of young guns and tough veterans including defenseman Denis Potvin, forwards Clark Gilles and Mike Bossy, center Bryan Trottier and goalie Billy Smith, all of whom are Hall of Famers.
The Islanders fell on hard times during the 1990s, but have come back to be a force in the Eastern Conference in recent years. The team made the playoffs four times during the 2000s and have been becoming more competitive each year. With newcomer John Taveras manning the puck and Rick DiPietro guarding the net, the Islanders have a bright future to look forward to.
The Nassau Coliseum has hosted countless concerts and large-scale events over the years, and the venue is a major stop on the U.S. arena circuit. Some of the most important tours in history have taken place at the building including Bruce Springsteen's The River tour, Led Zeppelin's North American Tour 1972, Bob Dylan's Planet Waves tour, Frank Sinatra's Variety Club International tour and countless other big names.
With easy access to New York City and the Tri-State area, the Nassau Coliseum has remained a preferred venue to catch an enthralling live performance or a pulse-pounding Islanders game for nearly four decades.
