US Open Tennis Record Holders

The US Open record holders have earned the top spots in the books for many reason, whether it be for consecutive US Open tennis wins or the most wins in a single tournament event. Jimmy Connors, who is tied with Pete Sampras for the most US Open Men’s Singles titles, is the only male player to have won three titles on three separate court types. Connors won the US Open on a grass court in 1975, on a clay court in 1976, and again on a DecoTurf court in 1978, 1982 and 1983. Chris Evert won her US Open Grand Slam titles on two types of surfaces. Evert won the Open on clay courts from 1975-1977, and on the DecoTurf court in 1978. These are the only two players to have won the US Open tournament on more than one court type.

Margaret Osborne duPont dominates the US Open Women’s and Mixed Doubles records, recording more US Open (then U.S. Championships) Grand Slam tennis wins in those categories than any other male or female tennis player all-time. Another interesting fact about duPont is that she is one of the few women to win a major title after childbirth. With Louise Brough, the duo recorded a record 20 Grand Slam titles (which was left untouched until Pam Shriver and Martina Navratilova pierced the record with 21 titles several decades later).

Pete Sampras, who is currently tied for the most US Open tennis titles with six, also hold the record for most Grand Slam titles earned in a lifetime. However, Swiss newcomer Roger Federer is poised to break the record if he can win three more titles in his lifetime. Roger Federer currently holds the US Open record for most consecutive Men’s Singles titles after 1968 (when the US Open went professional), tallying in at four consecutive wins.
