The World Cup is the most watched sporting event in the world, with over a billion football (soccer) fans following their team. Played every four years, it brings together the best players from 32 different countries to compete for the FIFA World Cup trophy. The teams each have to qualify to play in the World Cup, which occurs in the two years prior to the event. The World Cup tournament has 60+ matches and starts with a group stage in which two teams qualify from each of eight groups. Those sixteen teams then advance to the knockout stage, which includes a Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and World Cup Final.

The World Cup tournament has been played for over 80 years, but has only been won by 8 teams (Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain & Uruguay). All of the greatest soccer players in history have played in the World Cup, and a select few of those have been awarded the Golden Ball as best player on the winning squad, including: Zinedine Zidane, Oliver Kahn, Ronaldo, Diego Maradona, Paolo Rossi, Pele, Bobby Charlton & Giuseppe Meazza. The Golden Boot is an award for the top goal scorer in the World Cup and has been earned by soccer greats like: Miroslav Klose, Ronaldo and Gerd Muller. Brazil’s Ronaldo is the all-time leading goal scorer in World Cup history with 15 goals.

The 2014 World Cup is being hosted by Brazil. The 2018 tournament is scheduled to be played in Russia. The World Cup will visit the Middle East for the first time when Qatar hosts in 2022.

2016 World Cup Preview

The 2014 World Cup Draw is complete and the groups have been assigned. Look for host Brazil to have some exciting matches in Group A with Mexico and Croatia while the USA joins Germany, Portugal, and Ghana in Group G. With other top contenders in the 2014 World Cup like Spain in Group B and England in Group D matching up to some stiff competition, the world's biggest event is shaping up to be an exciting one.

Group A

  • 1. Brazil
  • 2. Croatia
  • 3. Mexico
  • 4. Cameroon

The host country/overall favorite to win it all is in Group A, and all other teams will be chasing Brazil's core of Neymar, Hulk and Paulinho. Mexico has a dangerous attacking game that can cut through any defense, while Croatia is led by one of the world's best #10s in Real Madrid's Luka Modric.

Group B

  • 1. Spain
  • 2. Netherlands
  • 3. Chile
  • 4. Australia

Australia got stuck at the tail end of one of the toughest groups in the World Cup, which includes defending champion Spain. The Spaniards will see a rematch of the 2010 World Cup final when they face the Netherlands, led by Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie. Chile has a very solid team and will be looking for a big win over Spain or the Dutch.

Group C

  • 1. Colombia
  • 2. Greece
  • 3. Ivory Coast
  • 4. Japan

Columbia, led by one of the world's best players in Falcao, looks to have drawn a good group. Each of Greece, Ivory Coast and Japan bring their own challenges, and any two of these four teams could advance without fans being surprised. Both the Ivory Coast and Japan made it past the group stages in 201.

Group D

  • 1. Uruguay
  • 2. Costa Rica
  • 3. England
  • 4. Italy

This is one of the best groups top to bottom, and includes there countries that have previously won the World Cup. Italy, Uruguay and England have won a combined 8 World Cups, with Uruguay winning the tournament the last time it was held in Brazil back in 1950. See superstars like Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney and Mario Balotelli in this unpredictable group.

Group E

  • 1. Switzerland
  • 2. Ecuador
  • 3. France
  • 4. Honduras

France will be looking to re-enter the World Cup spotlight with a bang after its torrid performance in South Africa, and will have Real Madrid's Karim Benzema leading them up front. In their way is Top 10-ranked Switzerland, who had no problem getting through the UEFA qualifier. Honduras and Ecuador will need to steal some points to get through Group E this summer.

Group F

  • 1. Argentina
  • 2. Bosnia-Herzegovina
  • 3. Iran
  • 4. Nigeria

While there no doubt among the analysts that Argentina will get through this group, it's still a please to watch it happen. Lionel Messi known as the world's best player, but his #1 goal is still to win a World Cup. Bosnia-Herzegovina is playing in its first World Cup and they'll likely battle Iran and Nigeria for the second place needed to move on past the group stages.

Group G

  • 1. Germany
  • 2. Portugal
  • 3. Ghana
  • 4. USA

Many fans stateside are calling Group G the "Group of Death", and you can see why. Germany are being picked by many to be a finalist with their young core of creative players, and Portugal is led by the one and only Cristiano Ronaldo. This United States team could be the best it's even been, but they'll need to get past a familiar foe in Ghana first before tackling the Germans. This is one of the most interesting groups to follow no matter who you're a fan of.

Group H

  • 1. Belgium
  • 2. Algeria
  • 3. Russia
  • 4. South Korea

Belgium is being picked my many as a non-tradition dark horse, and they have the firepower to make some noise. Led by Jan Vertonghen, Christian Benteke and Eden Hazard, they are a formidable opponent for any team. Russia and South Korea are both teams that could pose a problem for the Belgians, while Algeria wants to make up for the way it was eliminated in 2010.
